All the icons in these "Gallery" pages have been hand-painted by me, using egg tempera paint and gold leaf on boards covered with natural gesso, except as otherwise noted. Sacred symbolism infuses these images, materials, and methods.
These icons are based on traditional sacred images, developed over the centuries as part of the worship of the Christian orthodox churches. The iconographer (icon painter) does not aim for originality or self-expression - but somehow every iconographer develops a distinctive and identifiable artistic style.
This page serves as a Table of Contents. For more icons, with identification and commentary, go to the linked page.
Many of the icons photographed by Richard Anderson are available as high quality prints - See Prints & icons page.
